Why I (sometimes) Buy Cheap Tools

Wrench on table

?

?

Quality tools are the cornerstone of any home shop. But the cheapos have their place too. Let's say, for example, that the distributor hold-down bolt on your old GTI is buried just like the one on a small block Chevy. A box-end wrench is one right tool, but there's just no room to swing it once the closed end is on the bolt head. The solution: Cut off the open end and shorten the wrench so it fits. Only those with stuffed wallets would hack up a $10 wrench, which is why I never miss an opportunity to browse the discount bin at the local hardware or auto parts store. I keep a seperate box stuffed with the cheap stuff that I liberally modify to suit specific tasks.

Even the most comprehensive tool kit won't have the perfect tool for every job. When you're in a pinch, make your own.?
